S&M

An abbreviation for sadomasochism.

Sadism

A sexual behavior in which one person derives sexual excitement or pleasure from inflicting pain on someone else.

Sadomasochism (S&M)

A popular term for behaviors that involve both sexual sadism as well as masochism, often in a mutually consensual role-playing manner.

Safe word

A predetermined word or phrase used to stop a particular activity,  usually during S&M and B&D sex play.

Safer Sex

Sexual activities not involving the exchange of bodily fluids. Used to help prevent the transmission of diseases such as HIV. The only true safe sex is abstinence.

Salpingitis

An infection of the fallopian tubes.   

Satyriasis

A term that is used to refer to sexual behavior and desire in men that is considered excessive. It's akin to nymphomania in woman.  

Screw

A slang term for intercourse.  

Scrotum

The pouch of skin that hangs below the penis and contains parts of the spermatic cords, the testes and epididymis.

Secondary sex characteristics

Physical characteristics other than the sex organs, that distinguish men from women during puberty (e.g. pubic hair,facial hair and breasts).

Semen

The alkaline fluid expelled from the penis during ejaculation containing sperm as well as several other prostate fluids.

Seminal fluid

Another term for semen.

Seminal vesicles

A pair of small glands on both sides of the prostate which secrete much of the fluid in semen.

Seminiferous tubules

Tightly coiled tubules in the testes that manufacture sperm.

Sensate focus

An exercise that concentrates on touch and the giving and receiving of pleasure to reawaken sensual responses.

Serial monogamy

A continuous cycle of monogamous relationships. 

Sex flush

A rash that appears on the skin on different parts of the body during sexual arousal due to increased blood flow. Usually accompanied by heat.

Sex Addiction

A compulsive dependence on persistent, serial sexual activity.

Sex Aids

Also called sex toys, they are devices such as a vibrators, dildos, penis pumps, sex dolls, etc. designed to enhance sexual arousal and pleasure.

Sex-change operation

Surgery transsexuals undergo to change their anatomy to that of the other gender.

Sexology

The scientific study of sexuality.

Sexologist

A professional who studies sexual science.

Sexual aggression

Forcing sexual activity on an unwilling person.

Sexual Arousal Disorder

The inability to obtain or maintain an erection or vaginal lubrication despite adequate interest and stimulation. May be psychological in nature.

Sexual Aversion Disorder

A dysfunction characterized by extreme dislike and avoidance of sexual activities.

Sexual coercion

A term referring to any kind of sexual activity that is forced upon another person through the use of force, pressure, narcotics, etc.

Sexual differentiation

The changes that take place around six weeks of gestation that lead a fetus to develop physical and psychological male or female sex organs and characteristics.

Sexual double standard

The incorrect view that certain behavior is acceptable for one gender but not the other.

Sexual dysfunction

A difficulty or inability to respond sexually despite willingness that is stressful for the sufferer.

Sexual enhancement

Enriching and improving sexual relationships in people who are looking to build upon to their sex lives.

Sexual harassment

The abuse of status and/or power for sexual gain.

Sexual identity

A person's acknowledgment of their sexual orientation; heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual.

Sexual intercourse

The act of making love, usually penetrative sex, but encompassing many forms of sexual activity.

Sexual masochism

A sexual behavior in which a person is sexually aroused or excited from experiencing pain. 

Sexual Orientation

Heterosexuality, homosexuality or bisexuality based on sexual, social, cognitive and emotional attraction towards another. 

Sexual sadism

A sexual behavior in which a person is sexually aroused or excited by inflicting pain on others.  

Sexual surrogate

A member of a sex therapy team who interacts sexually with a patient to aid in their therapy.

Sexual variation

Sexual behavior that is not considered normal for a particular culture or region.

Sexually explicit material

Any form of material that graphically depicts sexual activities.

Sexually oriented material

Materials such as film, videos, photographs, magazines, books etc. whose main premise is sex.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

Illness that is given to another person through sexual contact.

Shallow thrusting

A technique used by men to delay ejaculation and prolong intercourse in which they slow down and use short strokes instead of thrusting deeper.

Shaft

The body of the penis.

Sixty-nine position (69)

A slang term for simultaneous oral sex.

Skene's glands

Glands opening into the urethra thought to be involved in female ejaculation following g-spot stimulation. Akin to the male prostate gland. 

Smegma  

An accumulation of a white, cheesy sebaceous secretion from beneath the foreskin.

Sodomy

A broad legal term which refers to supposedly unnatural acts such as anal intercourse, bestiality, or oral sex, varies according to location.

Softcore

Sexually oriented material that is nonexplicit and more erotic in nature than hardcore. 

Sperm

The male reproductive cell required for pregnancy. 

Spermatic cord

The cord suspending the testicle within the scrotum containing blood vessels, nerves and the vas deferens.

Spermatogenesis

The production of sperm in the seminiferous tubules in the testes.

Spermatozoan

Another term for sperm.

Spermicide

A substance such as nonoxynol-9 that kills sperm in order to prevent pregnancy and some STDs.

Spirochete

The type of spiral shaped bacteria that causes syphilis.

Squeeze technique

A technique used in the treatment of premature ejaculation in which a man or his partner squeezes the erect penis just below the glans when he feels the urge to ejaculate thereby increasing his stamina.

Start-stop Method

A sexual technique in which a man learns to control ejaculation by repeatedly ceasing stimulation prior to orgasm resulting in greater stamina.  A type of teasing oneself. 

Statutory rape

Sexual intercourse with a person who is under the legal age of consent.

STD

An acronym for Sexually Transmitted Disease.

Sterile

Incapable of reproducing.

Sterilization

A surgical procedure that renders someone incapable of reproduction.

Straight

Heterosexual.

Swingers

People who do not believe in monogamy and engage in sexual activities with their primary partner and others at the same time.  Also referred to as swapping.  

Syphilis

An STD caused by the Treponema pallidum bacterium which is highly infectious. 

Systematic desensitization

A therapy technique used to help heal sexual phobias in which deep muscle relaxation is used to reduce any anxiety the patient associates with certain sexual scenarios.
